David Allen Flowers is an up-and-coming, Boston-based conductor and music director. He has recently collaborated with the Arlington Children’s Theater, the Solomon-Schechter Day School of Greater Boston, and the New School of Music. This fall he will join the faculty, part-time, at the Berklee College of Music as an Assistant Professor, teaching fundamentals of conducting.

The Shift Orchestra Project is his answer to the many institutional dilemmas that face larger orchestras today. How do we engage younger, non-traditional audiences? How do we ensure adequate representation in the repertoire and among performers? Can we take a more egalitarian approach to artistic programming within orchestras? This is our lab-space to show the world what our generation of musicians is capable of, and what a modern orchestra can look like.

David holds an M.M. in Orchestral Conducting Studies from Penn State University, where he directed the Penn State Campus Orchestra and assistant conducted the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra. His thesis focused on the symphonies of Florence Price and the orchestral repertoire of 20th century Black composers. He was also a fellow at the Conductor’s Institute of South Carolina and the Sinfonietta Memphis online conducting program.

His other conducting/asst. conducting/music direction credits include the education departments at the Ogunquit playhouse and Chicago Opera Theater, the Savoyaires in Evanston, and the Ridgeville Band of Evanston. He maintains a private music studio and is on the faculty at the North End Music and Performing Arts Center.
